Bugging electronically?

I’m not sure if this is in the right section but I think it’s the closest.

So, My mom and father have been living separately for about 3 months now.

And since then I think my father has been bugging our house.
He has been able to know what my mom talks about on the phone, what we talk about privately in her room and maybe mine.
She has said some stupid lies to some people just to like make sure that he in fact is some how listening in to what she’s saying.

I can’t remember when exactly but when my mom would allow my father to enter our house in order to visit us, she found a Sansa Fuze hidden behind a lamp with the voice recorder on. She thought nothing of it so she just left it on a table and I think he must have taken it.

But ever since she found out that he knows stuff, she hasn’t let him into our house yet he’s still able to know the things that are said without even coming in to retrieve whatever it maybe.

I just wanted to know if anyone knew of any types of bugging devices that can be used as a long range thing and if this violates any laws.
My father lives about 10 miles away.
